The Woods Let us take a quick look at the woods. You will notice that the heads are quite small in comparison to those of modern day clubs. Most of these woods are absolute “Pro Line” clubs. The heads were made out of a single piece of Persimmon wood. The handles are made out of a single strip of leather.
The Irons Now take a look at the irons. You will notice that the heads are like knife blades. Most of these clubs were made for professionals and thus are absolutely “Pro Line”.
Waggle & Feel Grip the club like you are just about to hit a ball. Waggle the club from side to side and try to get the feel of the weight of the head of the club and the flexibility of the hickory shaft. Also try to place the weight of the club. Try a few test hits; hold the club loosely, but not too loosely. Try to feel the weight of the club throughout the whole swing.
Playing the Woods Tee the ball lower than with modern day clubs. The wooden shaft turns more than modern day shafts therefore try to keep your swing as balanced as possible. If the ball lies well on the fairway then you can easily play it with a wood.
Playing The Mid-Iron This iron is possibly the hardest iron to play with. It is so hard because it only has a loft of 25 degrees. Some players love it right from the start.
Playing the Mashie The average player can hit the ball 125 to 135 meters. This club is best for the chip-and-run stroke. If you are not good with any clubs then the Mashie is for you
Playing the Mashie Niblick A good Mashie Niblick is ideal for playing shots from a distance of 90 to 110 meters right onto the green. Watch out as all of the hickory clubs put less spin on the balls than modern clubs. Therefore the ball rolls further than would normally be expected.
Playing the Niblick This club is ideal for short distances; from 60 to 85 meters. It should be used for short and high pitch-strokes. The ball will easily land on the green from these distances. This is also a really good club for getting out of the bunkers
Playing the Putter The heads of hickory putters are normally made out of a single piece of steel. Sometimes they seem very light but with a light grip and the right swing they will feel right and natural.
